What’s On This Week
Thoughtful Queer Indie Gamedev Talks (1pm, 17 June)
Join an afternoon of thoughtful queer gamedev talk from some of the game designers and their friends exhibiting at Pride at Play!
Featuring Logan Timmins (LOGAN, I'M A TRANS MAN AND I'M HERE TO FUCK), Rae White (stand up), Elliot Herriman (Locomotive, A Day of Maintenance), and Luke Miller (The Beat, My Ex-Boyfriend the Space Tyrant), this is a fabulous opportunity to hear game designers talk about their work, and you can ask them questions on the day!
This panel will be moderated by our beloved narrative game designer Jae Stuart (Serenade Games, Pride at Play).
Book Launch: Cooperative Gaming (6pm, 14 June)
When Cooperative Gaming: Diversity in the Games Industry and How to Cultivate Inclusion came out in 2020, the authors Alayna Cole (Sledgehammer Games) and Jess Zammit (Infinity Plus Two) missed out on an opportunity to live out their author dreams by throwing an event where they could talk about a topic they are passionate about, read a passage from their book, and share their hard work with you.
This panel will be moderated by Cameron Honey-Swain (Pixel Hearts), and is presented in conjunction with the Games Symposium for Oceania and the Asia Pacific.
Games Symposium for Oceania and the Asia Pacific (14-15 June)
Over two days packed with talks from game designers and researchers, this is one big celebration of regional game design issues from Melbourne! Bringing speakers from Australia, New Zealand, the UK, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, India, we are proud to be hosting this free symposium.
Featuring keynote speakers: Dr Tingting Liu (Jinan University), Yang Jing (Allison) (City University of Hong Kong), Jini Maxwell (ACMI), and Dr Brendan Keogh (QUT).
You can participate in person (it’s fully catered!) or online via Zoom. Thanks to Australia Council for the Arts, this symposium will have live interpretation into Mandarin Chinese on both days, 10am-5pm.
Tabletop Roleplay Night (6pm, 13 June)
4 tickets left! Please note the line up has changed due to personal reasons.
Pause Menu and Pride at Play proudly invite you to a social evening of tabletop roleplaying games. Each game will be facilitated, and players of all experiences are welcome to try!
Special guest facilitators include Logan Timmins, designer of LOGAN: An Autobiographical Tabletop Game.
Doors open at 6pm at Pause Menu, 74 Rose St, Fitzroy VIC 3065.
That is everything happening at Pride at Play this week. If you missed it, Checkpoint Gaming interviewed Fae Daunt (SAE Institute, Pride at Play) and Alex Woodward (Lumi Interactive) live on JOY 94.9 radio. You can catch the recording here. Words on the street is that they’ve recorded an extended chat on Pride at Play and when that comes out, you’ll be one of the first to hear on this newsletter!
